moomoo Canada Review 2026
This moomoo Canada review finds an app-based broker with per-share pricing: CA$0.0149 a share with a CA$1.49 minimum on Canadian stocks and ETFs, and US$0.0099 a share with a US$1.99 minimum on US stocks and ETFs. moomoo offers cash, margin, TFSA, RRSP and spousal RRSP accounts, with no FHSA, RESP, joint or corporate account, and no fractional shares or DRIP. Its TFSA and RRSP can hold US dollars, with no fee stated, and margin starts from 3.85% in Canadian dollars. It scores 3.7 / 5, rank 8 of the 13 brokers we score. Figures are as of October 22, 2026.
At a glance
Verdict. moomoo Canada suits app-first traders who buy US shares in a TFSA, RRSP or margin account and want a low margin rate. It is a poor fit for first-time home buyers, families, and small monthly investors who want fractional shares or DRIP.

Commissions. Canadian stocks and ETFs cost CA$0.0049 a share plus a CA$0.01 platform fee, with a CA$1.49 minimum per order. US stocks cost US$0.0049 a share plus a US$0.005 platform fee, with a US$1.99 combined minimum. A 40-share order costs CA$1.49 or US$1.99.

Weighted points are rounded to three decimals; the total uses the unrounded values. Cost uses commissions and account fees for two trading profiles, and the US score uses USD in registered accounts and US commissions. 1. moomoo Canada Review: Our Verdict
The short version. moomoo Canada scores 3.7 / 5 and ranks eighth of the 13 online brokers we score. It is cheap to borrow at, solidly regulated and built around one app, but it charges per share where many rivals charge $0, and it offers only four of the 10 account types we count.
Where it earns points. moomoo’s CAD margin rate starts from 3.85% (as of November 3, 2025), second-lowest of the 10 brokers that publish one, which earns the full 2.5 margin points. TFSA and RRSP accounts can hold both Canadian and US dollars with no fee stated, worth the full 3 points for US dollars in registered accounts, and its US$1.99 minimum earns 1.5 of 2 points for US commissions, for 4.5 of 5 on US investing. moomoo states it is regulated by CIRO and is a CIPF member, for 4.0 of 5 on safety.
Where it loses points. Account types score 2.0 of 5 because there is no FHSA, RESP, joint or corporate account. Platform scores 3.0 of 5 because moomoo does not offer fractional shares or DRIP. Cost scores 4.52 of 5, below the $0-commission brokers, because every trade pays at least CA$1.49 or US$1.99.
The minimum problem. moomoo’s per-share rates look small, but the minimums decide what most orders cost. Any Canadian order of up to 100 shares pays CA$1.49 and any US order of up to 200 shares pays US$1.99. Our active profile of 36 orders a year costs $59.64 at moomoo, against $36.00 at Interactive Brokers Canada and $0.00 at Wealthsimple or Questrade.
Who should pick it. moomoo may suit an app-first investor who trades US shares in a TFSA or RRSP, wants to hold US dollars in those accounts, and borrows on margin at times. It does not suit anyone who needs an FHSA or RESP, or a monthly investor who wants to buy fractions of a share. Compare it with the full best online brokers in Canada ranking before you decide.
2. moomoo Fees in Canada: Commissions and Other Costs
How the commission works. moomoo fees in Canada have two parts on every stock and ETF order: a commission and a platform fee. On Canadian stocks and ETFs that is CA$0.0049 a share plus CA$0.01 a share, or CA$0.0149 a share combined, with a CA$1.49 minimum per order. On US stocks priced at US$1 or more it is US$0.0049 a share (minimum US$0.99) plus US$0.005 a share (minimum US$1.00), or US$0.0099 a share with a US$1.99 combined minimum. The SEC fee applies on US sales.
| Shares in the order | Canadian stock or ETF | US stock or ETF | IBKR fixed pricing, for comparison |
|---|---|---|---|
| 40 | CA$1.49 (minimum) | US$1.99 (minimum) | CAD 1.00 or USD 1.00 |
| 100 | CA$1.49 | US$1.99 (minimum) | CAD 1.00 or USD 1.00 |
| 500 | CA$7.45 | US$4.95 | CAD 5.00 or USD 2.50 |
| 1,000 | CA$14.90 | US$9.90 | CAD 10.00 or USD 5.00 |
Fees to hold an account. moomoo charges no monthly or annual maintenance fee and no inactivity fee. That makes a quiet account cheap to keep, unlike Webull’s $0.70 a month per account.
Fees to take money out. Each RRSP withdrawal (deregistration) costs CA$50. A full transfer to another institution costs $75 per currency of the assets, and a partial transfer $50 per currency, plus sales tax. An account holding both Canadian and US assets therefore pays ($75 + $75 = $150) plus tax for a full transfer.
| Item | moomoo fee |
|---|---|
| Maintenance fee, monthly or annual | $0 |
| Inactivity fee | $0 |
| RRSP withdrawal (deregistration) | CA$50 per withdrawal |
| Full transfer out | $75 CAD and/or $75 USD, per currency, plus sales tax |
| Partial transfer out | $50 CAD and/or $50 USD, per currency, plus sales tax |
| Incoming ATON and FOP transfers | Listed as free, marked with an asterisk for conditions |
What four investors pay. Every trade below is a $2,000 order of 40 shares, and the four patterns match our other reviews. Each yearly cost is commissions plus account fees, and moomoo charges no maintenance or inactivity fee, so account fees are $0.00.
| Profile | What they do in a year | Commissions and platform fees | Account fees | Yearly cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Buy-and-hold | 12 Canadian purchases | $17.88 (12 x CA$1.49) | $0.00 | $17.88 |
| Active | 24 Canadian and 12 US trades | $59.64 (24 x CA$1.49 + 12 x US$1.99) | $0.00 | $59.64 |
| US-focused | 12 US trades | $23.88 (12 x US$1.99) | $0.00 | $23.88 |
| Options | 48 US options trades of two contracts | $62.40 (48 x 2 x US$0.65) | $0.00 | $62.40 |
The pattern. Every stock order in these profiles pays the minimum, so the yearly cost rises with the number of orders. Our investment fee calculator adds up commissions, account fees and fund costs for your own pattern.
3. moomoo US Investing and USD Accounts
US commissions. On US stocks priced at US$1 or more, moomoo charges US$0.0049 a share in commission (minimum US$0.99) plus a US$0.005 a share platform fee (minimum US$1.00), or US$0.0099 a share with a US$1.99 combined minimum, as of October 22, 2026. The SEC fee applies on US sales. Any US order of up to 200 shares pays the US$1.99 minimum, and 1,000 US shares cost (1,000 x US$0.0099 = US$9.90).
How the US score works. Our US investing factor gives 3 points for US dollars in registered accounts with no fee (1.5 if a fee applies, 0.75 if not stated) and 2 points for a $0 US commission (1.5 at $2 or less, 0 above). moomoo gets the full 3 for its TFSA and RRSP and 1.5 for its US$1.99 minimum: (3 + 1.5 = 4.5) of 5. On our best brokers for US stocks list, which gives this factor a 40% weight, moomoo scores 4.0 / 5 and ranks 5 of 13, level with Wealthsimple at 4.0 / 5 but behind it before rounding (3.955 against 4.05).
| Broker | US stock and ETF commission | USD in registered accounts | US investing sub-score (out of 5) |
|---|---|---|---|
| moomoo Canada | US$0.0099 a share, minimum US$1.99 | TFSA and RRSP; no fee stated | 4.5 |
| Questrade | $0 | No extra cost | 5.0 |
| Wealthsimple | $0 | $10 a month on Core; included on Premium and Generation | 3.5 |
| Webull Canada | $0 | Not stated | 2.75 |
| Interactive Brokers Canada | USD 0.005 a share, minimum USD 1 | Not stated | 2.25 |
US dollars in a TFSA or RRSP. moomoo says TFSA and RRSP holders can hold both Canadian and US dollars, with no fee stated. Under the Canada-US tax treaty, US dividends paid into an RRSP are exempt from US withholding once the account is documented. In a TFSA or a cash or margin account, 15% is withheld with a Form W-8BEN on file, or 30% without one, and in a TFSA it cannot be recovered. Our guide to US stocks in a TFSA explains why.
Dividend investors. moomoo does not appear on our list of the best brokers for dividend investing, which ranks only brokers that offer DRIP; it is one of six brokers we score with no DRIP listed. Dividends land as cash, so each reinvestment is a new order that pays the CA$1.49 or US$1.99 minimum.
4. moomoo TFSA, RRSP and Other Account Types
What is offered. moomoo Canada offers cash, margin, TFSA, RRSP and spousal RRSP accounts. Its own article says FHSA, RESP, joint and corporate accounts are not available. RRIF, LIRA and LIF accounts are not listed. That gives moomoo four of the 10 account types we count, and 2.0 of 5 on our account types factor.
| Account | Available at moomoo |
|---|---|
| TFSA | Yes, holds CAD and USD |
| RRSP | Yes, holds CAD and USD |
| Spousal RRSP | Yes |
| Cash and margin | Yes |
| FHSA | No |
| RESP | No |
| Joint | No |
| Corporate | No |
| RRIF, LIRA, LIF | Not listed |
The moomoo TFSA. The moomoo TFSA ranks 8 of 13 on our list of brokers offering a TFSA, by overall score. The 2026 TFSA dollar limit is $7,000. The TFSA can hold US dollars, with no fee stated. See the best TFSA accounts and the best TFSA for US stocks lists; on the second, moomoo scores 4.0 / 5 and ranks 5 of 13.
RRSP withdrawals cost more here. Each RRSP withdrawal costs a CA$50 deregistration fee on top of the tax withheld. Outside Quebec, withholding on an RRSP lump sum is 10% on $5,000 or less, 20% over $5,000 up to $15,000, and 30% over $15,000. A $5,000 withdrawal has ($5,000 x 10% = $500) withheld and pays the CA$50 fee. The 2026 RRSP dollar limit is $33,810. Our RRSP guide covers the rules.
The gaps that matter. First-time buyers cannot open an FHSA at moomoo, so their $8,000 a year of FHSA room has to be used at another broker; see the best FHSA accounts list. Families need another broker for an RESP; see our best RESP providers. Couples cannot hold a joint non-registered account.
Need an FHSA or RESP as well? Compare brokers that offer every account in one place.
5. moomoo Platforms and Tools
One app, two screens. moomoo runs on the moomoo app, which comes in mobile and desktop versions. Having both a desktop platform and a mobile app earns moomoo two of the five points on our platform factor, and options trading earns a third.
No fractional shares. moomoo’s own comparison article says it does not support fractional shares. Every purchase must be a whole number of shares, so a $100 monthly contribution cannot buy part of a share that costs more than that. Fractional shares are worth 1 point on our platform factor and 1.5 points on our beginners factor, and moomoo scores 0 on both.
No DRIP. moomoo states that DRIP is not available, though an auto-invest feature is. Dividends land as cash, and because the standard interest rate on cash is not published, small dividends can sit idle until you reinvest them by hand. Each manual reinvestment pays at least CA$1.49 or US$1.99, which is a large share of a small dividend: reinvesting a CA$30 dividend in one order costs about 5% of it (CA$1.49 ÷ CA$30).
Auto-invest instead. Auto-invest lets you schedule regular purchases. Remember that each scheduled order pays the per-share commission and platform fee, with the minimum. Twelve monthly orders cost at least (12 x CA$1.49 = CA$17.88) a year.
Where moomoo sits. moomoo ranks 7 of 10 on our best investing apps list, which uses the beginners weighting and only includes brokers whose mobile app is named on the pages we checked. The two missing features, fractional shares and DRIP, explain most of the gap to the apps above it.
6. moomoo Research and Education
Level 2 data. moomoo’s FAQ says there is no minimum deposit, but the same article elsewhere cites $100 for Level 2 data access. Level 2 data shows the bids and offers waiting at prices beyond the best quote, which some active traders use to judge how easily an order will fill. Long-term investors rarely need it.
What we could not confirm. Other research tools, news, screeners and any paid data packages were not part of the figures we checked on moomoo’s pages, so we do not describe them. Our score does not weigh research, because its value depends on how you invest.
Tools are not a strategy. Charts and data can make frequent trading feel productive, but every trade at moomoo pays at least CA$1.49 or US$1.99. Thirty US trades a month at the minimum cost (30 x 12 x US$1.99 = US$716.40) a year. A written plan for what you buy, when and why tends to cut costs more than any tool.
Where to learn the basics. Our guide to how to invest in Canada covers choosing accounts, an asset mix and a contribution plan. Our investing for beginners hub links every learning guide, and our guide on how to buy US stocks in Canada covers accounts and withholding tax step by step.
7. moomoo Options, Margin and Advanced Trading
Options pricing. moomoo charges no base fee on US options and US$0.65 per contract, with a US$1.00 minimum per order. The options platform fee is waived until further notice, and there is no fee to exercise or be assigned. Canadian options pricing is not listed on the pages we checked.
| Item | moomoo fee |
|---|---|
| US options, per contract | US$0.65 |
| US options, minimum per order | US$1.00 |
| Options platform fee | Waived until further notice |
| Exercise or assignment | $0 |
| Canadian options | Not listed |
How that ranks. Our options profile, four US equity options trades a month of two contracts each, costs $62.40 a year at moomoo (48 x 2 x US$0.65), the same as Interactive Brokers Canada. Questrade and Wealthsimple charge $0 per contract on US equity options. moomoo ranks 5 of 13 on our best options trading platforms list at 3.7 / 5. The $0 exercise and assignment fee is a plus: Questrade charges $24.95 to exercise.
Margin rates. moomoo’s margin rates start from 3.85% in Canadian dollars (as of November 3, 2025) and from 6.4% in US dollars. “From” means the lowest rate available; the rate for your balance may be higher, and the tiers were not published on the pages we checked. moomoo ranks 2 of 10 on our lowest margin rates in Canada list, behind Interactive Brokers Canada at 3.675%.
| Broker | CAD margin rate | Interest on $10,000 for a year |
|---|---|---|
| Interactive Brokers Canada | 3.675% | $367.50 |
| moomoo Canada | From 3.85% | From $385.00 |
| Wealthsimple (Core) | 4.95% | $495.00 |
| Webull Canada | 7.45% | $745.00 |
| Questrade | 8.70% | $870.00 |
A caution on borrowing. A low rate makes borrowing cheaper, not safer. If the shares you bought on margin fall, you can be asked to add cash or have positions sold, and losses on borrowed money are still your losses. Please read moomoo’s margin terms in full before you borrow.
8. moomoo Cash Interest
The Cash Sweep program. moomoo runs a Cash Sweep program for uninvested cash. Its welcome promotion cites 6% APY for 30 days after activation. The standard rate that applies after that period was not published on the pages we checked.
What the promotion is worth. A promotional rate for 30 days is worth far less than the headline suggests. On $5,000, 6% a year for 30 days is roughly ($5,000 x 6% x 30 ÷ 365 = $24.66) before compounding. After that, the account earns the unpublished standard rate.
How we score it. Our cash and margin factor gives 2.5 points for headline cash interest of 1% or more and 1 point for any positive rate. moomoo’s standard rate is not published and we do not count a 30-day promotional rate, so moomoo gets 0 of 2.5 for cash. Its margin rate earns the full 2.5, for 2.5 of 5 on the factor.
How rivals compare. Interactive Brokers Canada pays 1.675% on Canadian-dollar cash above CAD 13,000, with full rates for accounts worth more than USD 100,000. Questrade’s published formula gives 0% at today’s prime rate. Webull’s cash rate is not shown, and Wealthsimple does not state a rate for cash in its trading accounts.
What to do with idle cash. If you are holding cash for more than a few weeks, a high-interest savings account may pay a published rate. Inside a TFSA, where the 2026 dollar limit is $7,000, uninvested cash at an unknown rate wastes tax-free room. Our savings hub compares the options.

9. Is moomoo Safe in Canada? Safety and Regulation
Regulation. moomoo’s Canadian business is Moomoo Financial Canada Inc. moomoo states that it is regulated by CIRO, the Canadian Investment Regulatory Organization, which oversees investment dealers. Moomoo Financial Canada Inc. is on the Canadian Investor Protection Fund’s current member list. With both memberships stated, moomoo scores 4.0 of 5 on our safety factor.
CIPF coverage. CIPF protects client property, meaning cash and securities, that is missing when a member firm becomes insolvent. Coverage is set by account group at each member firm.
| Account group | Accounts included | CIPF limit |
|---|---|---|
| General accounts | Cash, margin, TFSA, FHSA, combined | $1,000,000 |
| Retirement accounts | RRSP, RRIF, LIF, combined | $1,000,000 |
| RESPs | RESPs where you are the subscriber, combined | $1,000,000 |
What that means at moomoo. Your moomoo cash, margin and TFSA accounts share one $1,000,000 limit, and your RRSP and spousal RRSP fall under the separate $1,000,000 retirement limit. CIPF does not cover a fall in the value of your investments, unsuitable advice, the failure of a company whose shares you own, or crypto assets.
Ownership. Our rubric adds a point for brokers owned by a bank or a financial cooperative group. moomoo is not, so it ties at 4.0 with Interactive Brokers Canada, Wealthsimple, Webull and Qtrade. Our guide to CIPF vs CDIC explains how investor protection and deposit insurance differ, and our page on CIPF and CDIC coverage at Wealthsimple shows the rules at one rival.
10. Opening a moomoo Account, Transfers and Current Offers
Minimum deposit. moomoo’s FAQ states there is no minimum deposit. The same article elsewhere cites $100 for Level 2 data access. Like any Canadian broker, moomoo needs your photo ID and social insurance number, because investment income is reported to the CRA.
Transfers in. Incoming ATON and FOP transfers are listed as free, marked with an asterisk for conditions. moomoo’s promotion article says it typically reimburses $100 of transfer fees on transfers of $10,000 or more under its Transfer Rewards program, but that was not confirmed in formal terms on the pages we checked. If your current broker charges $150 to transfer out, assume you may pay at least part of it. Ask for a direct transfer: a TFSA moved directly does not affect your contribution room, while withdrawing and re-depositing it yourself counts as a new contribution. Our guide on how to transfer an investment account covers the steps.
Transfers out. A full transfer costs $75 per currency and a partial transfer $50 per currency, plus sales tax. An RRSP holding both Canadian and US assets costs ($75 + $75 = $150) plus tax to move out in full.
Current offers. moomoo’s article describes welcome share rewards at CA$1,000 or CA$8,000 of net deposits and transfer rewards of up to $2,300, but their dates are not stated.
| Offer | What you get | Dates |
|---|---|---|
| Welcome share rewards | Shares at CA$1,000 or CA$8,000 of net deposits | Not stated |
| Transfer rewards | Up to $2,300 | Not stated |
Read the terms. A reward should never be the reason to choose a broker: the CA$1.49 and US$1.99 minimums and the per-currency exit fees apply for as long as you stay.
11. moomoo Customer Support
What this review covers. Support hours and contact channels for Canadian clients are not part of the figures we checked for this review, so we do not list them. We print only support details we can confirm in our research.
Questions worth asking early. Two answers affect your costs at moomoo and are not fully published: the formal terms of the Transfer Rewards reimbursement and the standard Cash Sweep rate after the welcome period. Ask for each in writing before you move a large balance.
Have these ready. Your account number, the account type (TFSA, RRSP, spousal RRSP, cash or margin), the institution you are moving from and a recent statement. For US shares, confirm a Form W-8BEN is on file for your TFSA, cash and margin accounts; without it, US dividends can be withheld at 30% instead of 15%.
Keep a record. Note the date, who you dealt with and what was agreed, and save chats and emails. A dated record is the fastest way to resolve a missing reward, a transfer delay or a disputed fee.
12. moomoo Canada Pros and Cons
Pros
- CAD margin from 3.85%, second-lowest of the 10 brokers that publish a rate
- TFSA and RRSP can hold US dollars, with no fee stated
- No maintenance or inactivity fee
- $0 to exercise or be assigned on US options
- Mobile and desktop versions of the moomoo app
- No minimum deposit, per moomoo’s FAQ
- CIRO regulation stated and CIPF membership
Cons
- Minimum of CA$1.49 or US$1.99 on every stock and ETF order
- No FHSA, RESP, joint or corporate account
- No fractional shares and no DRIP
- CA$50 for each RRSP withdrawal
- Transfer-out fees charged per currency: $75 full, $50 partial, plus tax
- Standard cash interest rate not published
- US$0.65 per options contract, where Questrade and Wealthsimple charge $0
The balance. moomoo’s strengths, low margin and US dollars in registered accounts, are real but narrow. Its weaknesses touch most investors: the minimums affect small and frequent buyers, the missing fractional shares and DRIP affect monthly investors, and the missing FHSA and RESP affect first-time buyers and parents.
What would raise the score. Under our rubric, adding the FHSA and RESP would add 1 point to account types, and fractional shares and DRIP would add 2 points to platform. A published standard cash rate of 1% or more would add 2.5 points to cash and margin.
13. moomoo Compared With Rivals
The three rivals. We compare moomoo with Interactive Brokers Canada, the other per-share broker, which ranks third at 4.2 / 5; Webull Canada, another app-first broker; and Wealthsimple, a $0-commission app that offers all 10 account types we count. Fees are as of October 22, 2026 and scores as of October 23, 2026.

| Transfer-out fee | $75 full or $50 partial, per currency | Not published for ATON | $150 full or $50 partial | $0 |
| CIPF member | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes |
Costs for the four profiles. Using the four profiles from section 2, here is the yearly cost at each broker in commissions plus account fees. Webull’s figures include its $8.40 a year account fee.
| Profile | moomoo Canada | Interactive Brokers Canada | Webull Canada | Wealthsimple |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Buy-and-hold | $17.88 | $12.00 | $8.40 | $0.00 |
| Active | $59.64 | $36.00 | $8.40 | $0.00 |
| US-focused | $23.88 | $12.00 | $8.40 | $0.00 |
| Options | $62.40 | $62.40 | $103.44 | $0.00 |
Reading the table. Interactive Brokers Canada costs less than moomoo on three of the four profiles and the same on options, and it offers the FHSA and RRIF. Webull costs $8.40 a year for every stock profile, which is its account fee, and Wealthsimple costs $0.00 throughout, so both cost less than moomoo for stock trading. moomoo costs less than Webull for options: $62.40 against $103.44. 14. Who moomoo Suits and Who Should Look Elsewhere
App-first US traders in a TFSA or RRSP. If you trade US shares from your phone and want to hold US dollars in your TFSA or RRSP, moomoo does that with no fee stated, while Wealthsimple charges $10 plus tax a month for a USD account on Core. moomoo scores 4.0 / 5 on our US stocks list, rank 5 of 13.
Occasional margin borrowers. moomoo’s CAD margin rate starts from 3.85%, second only to Interactive Brokers Canada’s 3.675%. A borrower who uses margin now and then pays far less here than at Webull (7.45%) or Questrade (8.70%).
Options traders who exercise. US$0.65 per contract with $0 exercise and assignment fees suits options traders who hold to expiry, though Questrade and Wealthsimple charge $0 per contract.
Who should look elsewhere. First-time home buyers who need an FHSA, parents who need an RESP, couples who want a joint account and business owners who want a corporate account will need another broker. Monthly investors who want fractional shares or automatic dividend reinvestment are better served by brokers that offer both. Our best brokers for beginners, best investing apps and best brokers for US stocks lists rank the alternatives, and our broker reviews hub links every review.
A two-broker setup. Some investors keep an FHSA or RESP at a full-range broker such as Questrade and use moomoo only for a TFSA or margin account. That works, but each extra broker adds its own exit fees and paperwork, so count both before you split.
What You Need and What You Get With moomoo

- A smartphone or computer for the moomoo app
- For US shares: a completed Form W-8BEN
What you get from moomoo
- Per-share pricing from CA$1.49 or US$1.99 an order

How to Open and Fund a moomoo Account
- Check the account you need is offered. moomoo offers cash, margin, TFSA, RRSP and spousal RRSP accounts. For an FHSA or RESP, plan another broker. Our investment accounts hub compares every type.
- Download the app and apply. Have your photo ID and social insurance number ready.
- Fund the account. moomoo’s FAQ states there is no minimum deposit. For a transfer, request a direct transfer so your TFSA room is not affected.
- File Form W-8BEN. If you will hold US shares, file the form so US dividends in a TFSA, cash or margin account are withheld at 15% rather than 30%.
- Choose where US holdings sit. US dividends in the RRSP are exempt from US withholding once the account is documented; in the TFSA, 15% is withheld and cannot be recovered.
- Size your orders. Place fewer, larger orders so the CA$1.49 and US$1.99 minimums are a smaller share of each trade.
- Review once a year. Compare your real costs, including RRSP withdrawal and transfer fees, with other brokers using the broker cost calculator above.
10 Strategies to Keep moomoo Costs Low
1. Use the $0 exercise and assignment fee
moomoo charges $0 to exercise or be assigned on US options, while Questrade charges $24.95 to exercise. If your options plan includes holding positions to expiry, that difference is a real saving. Price each order with the US$0.65 per contract and the US$1.00 minimum in mind.
2. Reinvest dividends in batches
moomoo has no DRIP, so dividends arrive as cash. Reinvesting a CA$30 dividend on its own costs about 5% of it (CA$1.49 ÷ CA$30). Letting several dividends build up and reinvesting them in one order keeps the minimum a smaller share of the amount.
3. Fill the minimum
The CA$1.49 minimum covers up to 100 Canadian shares (100 x CA$0.0149 = CA$1.49), and the US$1.99 minimum covers up to 200 US shares. Orders below those sizes pay the same as orders at them.
4. Buy quarterly, not monthly
Twelve monthly orders cost at least (12 x CA$1.49 = CA$17.88) a year; four quarterly orders cost at least (4 x CA$1.49 = CA$5.96). If you use auto-invest, a longer interval saves minimums.
5. Plan RRSP withdrawals
Each RRSP withdrawal costs CA$50 plus withholding tax. Two withdrawals cost CA$100 in fees; one larger withdrawal costs CA$50. Note that withholding rises to 20% above $5,000, so plan the size with your tax in mind.
6. Hold US dividend payers in the RRSP
US dividends in an RRSP are exempt from US withholding once the account is documented. In a TFSA or cash account, 15% is withheld. Putting US dividend payers in the RRSP can save that 15%.
7. Put options contracts in one order
The US$1.00 minimum applies per order. Two single-contract orders cost (2 x US$1.00 = US$2.00); one two-contract order costs (2 x US$0.65 = US$1.30).
8. Count the exit fee per currency
Transfer-out fees are charged per currency. A full transfer of an account with CAD and USD assets costs ($75 + $75 = $150) plus tax. Know this before you split holdings across currencies.
9. Ask for a direct TFSA transfer
When you move a TFSA to moomoo, ask for a direct transfer between institutions. A direct transfer does not affect your contribution room. Withdrawing the money and depositing it yourself counts as a new contribution, and any amount over your room is taxed at 1% a month.
10. Keep FHSA and RESP money elsewhere
moomoo does not offer the FHSA or RESP. Do not skip those accounts because your main broker lacks them: the FHSA gives $8,000 of deductible room a year, and RESP grants are paid only into an RESP.
Illustrative Example: A Year at moomoo With a TFSA and RRSP
This example is hypothetical. Priya, 31, lives in Ontario and opens a moomoo TFSA and RRSP. In the TFSA she buys 60 shares of a Canadian ETF each month. In the RRSP she holds US dollars and buys 100 US shares six times during the year. She also takes two RRSP withdrawals of $3,000 each.
- TFSA purchases: (60 x CA$0.0149 = CA$0.894), below the minimum, so each order costs CA$1.49, and (12 x CA$1.49 = CA$17.88) a year.
- RRSP US purchases: commission (100 x US$0.0049 = US$0.49, raised to the US$0.99 minimum) plus platform fee (100 x US$0.005 = US$0.50, raised to the US$1.00 minimum), so US$1.99 an order, and (6 x US$1.99 = US$11.94) a year.
- Account fees: moomoo charges no maintenance or inactivity fee, so ($0) for both accounts.
- RRSP withdrawals: (2 x CA$50 = CA$100) in deregistration fees. Tax withheld at 10% on each: (2 x $3,000 x 10% = $600), a prepayment of the tax on income she must report.
- US dividends of US$120 in the RRSP: no US withholding once documented. In her TFSA they would lose (US$120 x 15% = US$18).
- Fees for the year: ($17.88 + $11.94 + $0 + $100.00 = $129.82).
- If she later moves both accounts out in full: the TFSA holds Canadian assets only ($75) and the RRSP holds both currencies ($75 + $75 = $150), so ($75 + $150 = $225) plus sales tax.
At a $0-commission broker, items 1 and 2 would cost $0.00, a saving of ($17.88 + $11.94 = $29.82) a year; check that broker’s fee for holding US dollars in an RRSP, such as Wealthsimple Core’s $10 a month. Run your own trades through the broker cost calculator above.
